Future Floating Farm
Rising sea levels and densely urbanized delta metropoles are motivations for floating cities. But how about our food production infrastructure?
Agriculture is more space extensive then cities, and also threatened by increasing flood risks. Actually, aqua-culture and hydro-culture already provide the highest yields per square metre and do not require soil, so when will agriculture move onto the water?
This study covers the future of farming on the water and in flood-prone regions. The objective is to produce sustainable and climate-adaptive food systems for a self-sufficient, densely populated delta metropolis. This study has been worked out in the publication ‘Greenhouses in the future. Light and floating; Kassen in de toekomst. Licht en drijvend’ (2010). Additionally, a patent for floating greenhouses has been developed.
Explorative studies for a floating farm in Rotterdam were made, which resulted in a floating farm for cows as demonstration of its possibilities.
