TAINAN FLOATING GARDENS
Twelve small floating gardens were constructed through series of workshops with Taiwanese and Dutch students. Various materials are tested. The first two gardens were constructed from polyfoam debris as found on the beach “From waste in nature, a foundation for nature”.
The second series of floating gardens were constructed from plastic tubes and bamboo. Various mangroves and marsh plants are grown on top of the raft with coconut fibre mats and soil as growing medium.
These gardens were designed with Dutch designer Will van Doorn for the occasion of the Boulevard Art Festival Tainan 2014.
The third series were to be constructed from bio-materials only. The motivation for this is to avoid contributing to (plastic) waste after typhoons. The structure was made with bamboo, organic ropes and coconut fibre mats.
The gardens are placed in Anping Canal and the harbor to provide more ecology. Continuous tests and monitoring is done to improve floating gardens and their benefits. The projects are in collaboration with National Cheng Kung University and the Tainan municipality.
