Floating Greenhouse Patent
The Dutch innovation network for greenhouses (SIGN) commissioned development of a floating foundation for horticulture application. Various designs were developed, including a new lightweight foundation system. This foundation was further engineered and patented as ‘Floating foundation for greenhouse farming utility’. The potential of (up)floating greenhouses is to combine horticulture and water retention in metropolitan areas. Floating greenhouses support the world food system by minimizing the ecological-footprint and keeping food production nearby cities.
These floating greenhouses will reduce the spatial pressure by combining water retention space, benefiting urbanization and nature.
A prototype was development, and scaled production is expected to be highly competitive with current available products. Another opportunity is the use of the floating cultivation floor in existing greenhouses. Better quality, faster to build and possible efficient cultivation techniques guarantee a strong position in the marked.
