Thailand Rafthouse

The South-East Asia’s tradition of raft houses is ending. Policy is to clear the rivers and raft houses are wrongly accused to be polluters of the water. For example, Kampong Chhnang in Cambodia used to be the home for 5,000 people on floating homes. The authorities took these homes away in 2022. All that remains from this tradition are touristy floating markets in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. Waterarchitect, Site-Specific Co. Ltd, and students from NCKU and Thammasat universities set up a workshop to learn from the last traditional raft builder in Thailand. This 77-year-old Grandfather was still climbing bamboo trees to select the best bamboo. The team built a small Thai raft house according to the traditional methods. The floating bamboo raft house was donated to the folk museum in Phitsanulok, Thailand.
