Elevated Greenhouse

The Westland area in the Netherlands has among the highest crop yields per surface area in the world. The Westland greenhouses are in the densely populated area of the Randstad. The polders here have limited water retention space for future climate extremes. This design study, commissioned by the Dutch Innovation Networkd and SIGN, explored how multiple use of space could solve spatial pressures. Various functions can be stacked and combined into one integrated design. Functions to stack are greenhouse agriculture above a warehouse, parking, roads and water retention. Functions to combine with a greenhouse can be various urban building functions, an agro-hotel for agricultural workers, residential, school, restaurant or offices. The greenhouse can contribute to warm up the other building functions. Public spaces can even be combined with growing crops. The World Horti Center in the Westland follows these stacked and combined functions in one integrated design.
