Balance Island Haringvliet
The plan ‘Balance Island’ has won both the Delta Alliance Young Professionals Award, and the Delta Water Award. Balance Island follows the building-with-nature principles to prevent salinity intrusion into the Haringvliet in the South of Holland. A natural sandy island is to be dredged into the front delta to form a semi-open bay. This bay extends the gradient between salt and fresh water, restoring an essential balance for migratory fish and estuarine nature. This brings benefits for nature, tourism, agriculture and climate adaptation.
This innovative usage of the front delta is a great example of Deltatechnology applicable in all delta’s worldwide. Feasibility study has also been carried out for Bangladesh and Vietnam. Balance Island is a collaboration between Grontmij, Imares and Waterarchitect.
